Spending on stopping and preparing the country for the worst effects of climate change, however, is much more contentious. While climate change is the greatest threat to human civilization that our species has ever faced, and while its economic impact is set to be enormous and potentially disastrous, most American politicians - in both political parties - oppose policies that would decarbonize the U.S. economy and prepare this country for the worst effects to come.

Progressive Democrats and social movements like the Sunrise Movement push politicians to include a plan for climate change mitigation and prevention in government spending.

Is spending on climate change a major priority of the U.S. government? Explain your answer.
