A central theme in The Great Gatsby revolves around the American Dream.
The "American Dream" is the belief that with hard work, talent and determination, a person can achieve whatever they wish. This belief is a driving force in American culture. The pursuit of the dream propels the American economy; ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to achieve the dream is one of the key functions of our government.
The term, "American Dream", was coined by James Truslow Adams, a historian. Adams said, "The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. "

1. The "dream" varies for each person. The largesse of what's envisioned likely depends on which social class (lower, middle, upper) you start in. Describe what you see as the typical "American Dream", and then explain how this might vary depending on social class.
2. While achieving the "dream" is possible for all Americans, it is not equally accessible. Depending on your gender, race, sexual orientation, you will face additional obstacles to achievement. Choose a group that faces additional obstacles to achievement and explain the obstacles they face.
3. While it didn't start this way, the American dream eventually became about the acquisition of material possessions. What do you think this means? What material possessions are sought after?
