As he passed coworkers in the hall, Scott shook his head, muttering that someone had stolen his lunch and slamming his door once he reached his own office. Given Scott's usually jovial outlook, this was not typical behavior -- Scott had an easygoing disposition and a reputation for laughing off difficulties.
Workers who had begun to mingle in the corridors to gossip about Scott's mood quickly uncovered the explanation: Someone had phoned Rocco's Pizzeria, cancelled Scott's sandwich order, and substituted an order for 10 mammoth pizza pies. Scott was infuriated, while Rocco, who had delivered the pies, was confused -- leaving the entire office distracted.
Moments later, workers were astonished to encounter Rocco, loaded down with pizza boxes, on his way into the conference room; their astonishment increased when Scott, smiling broadly, sailed through the halls, announcing to all he met, "Hey, everybody, free lunch in the conference room."
As workers poured into the conference room, Scott called for quiet, pointing at Gerry: "Here's the guy to thank for this magnificent feast -- our magnanimous colleague Gerry, who will be picking up the bill."
"I will?" spluttered Gerry, who was clearly shocked.
Scott laughed as he bit into a slice. "You're a smart guy, but you should acquaint yourself with the office phone directory. You habitually reverse two digits when you dial me -- just ask Maria, who gets the call instead -- and that's exactly how you gave the number to Rocco when you placed the order." Rocco smiled and handed Gerry the bill. As Gerry stared at the phone number he had given, he realized that it was time to make amends; He opened his wallet and paid Rocco.
"After all," Scott said, grabbing another slice, "getting even is fine, but I prefer to revenge myself by eating well." The office applauded, knowing that this was one story that would live on in posterity.
