When you read a work of literature, you must consider a number of different elements in order to understand the full meaning of the author's message. Some of these elements include mood, theme, and conflict. When you view a piece of fine art, you often look for many of these same elements.
Exercise A. Directions: Look at the painting Mrs. Siddons as Lady Macbeth by G. H. Harlon (on page 366 in Act III, scene 2). Examine the use of lighting and color in the painting. Notice Lady Macbeth's hands and facial expression. Now answer these questions about the painting.
1. Does Lady Macbeth appear to be angry, excited, scared or serene? Explain why you think she looks that way.
2. Knowing what you do about the plot of The Tragedy of Macbeth, what do you think Lady Macbeth is most likely thinking about in this painting?
3. What are some elements of the painting that make you think of conflict and danger?
Exercise B. Directions: Now look at the work by Cattermole entitled Scene from Macbeth (on page 371 in Act III scene 4). Answer these questions.
1. What type of conflict do you think is shown here - internal or external? Explain your answer.
2. Who is Macbeth in the painting? Why did you pick that character?
3. Who are some of the other figures in the painting?
